1925-1956
A Star is Born;
The Capitol on the Rise

These decades were not only the peak of the Capitol's popularity as a cinema, but of Cinema's most widespread appeal. Beginning as a cheap option for a night of grand entertainment, cinemas enjoyed the exclusive privilege of being the only place to witness the technological marvel of the moving image.

Stephen Gaunson, Senior Lecturer and Cinema studies academic on the history of The Capitol

The Capitol Theatre is dawned with unique iconography from this bygone era, each with their own histories, stories and lives to uncover.

We respectfully acknowledge The Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nations on whose stolen land we work. We extend this acknowledgement to all Traditional Owners of the lands and waters where our work reaches and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise the rich and continuing history of storytelling that has continued to take place on this land.

Sovereignty was never ceded.  This always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
